Dummy Duck

Hey, it’s Alan. Well, this is the first real comic on the newly redesigned website. It introduces two of the main characters, Lil’ Red the tomato, and Dummy Duck, the duck. The plan is to post a new comic each Monday. If you’re wondering how it was made, I’ll let you know. I got the overall panel dimensions from scans of real honest to goodness newspaper comics, so you know it’s good. I drew a small rough version first to get the basic idea. Then I drew the panels and credit text in Adobe Illustrator. I printed it out in a large format on 11×17 paper. The next step was penciling in the characters with light blue colored pencil on the 11×17 page. Once I got that how I liked it, I inked it with a regular old Pilot G2 .07 black pen. The lettering of the dialogue was all done with a plain old Sharpie marker, and I have to work fast ’cause those fumes really get to me after a while. Then I scanned in the black and white version of the comic and imported it into Adobe Photoshop to adjust the levels, get rid of the light blue pencil marks and fix a few minor errors. After that, I printed out another 11×17 copy of it and painted in the colors with real honest to goodness water color paints. (I know!) And last but not least, the painted comic got scanned in one more time and went through another round of minor adjustments in Photoshop. The end result is what you see here! I hope you love it!
